SUMMARY:The Renaissance Portrait from Van Eyck to Titian with Paula Nuttall
DESCRIPTION:Portraiture is a quintessentially renaissance art form which evolved in response to new ideas about realism\, likeness and posterity. This lecture looks at its development in Italy and the north\, across a variety of media\, from sculpted busts and medals to painted portraits. It also discusses how and why portraits were made\, and the role they played in expressing status\, personal qualities and commemoration\, unravelling the meanings of still-life detail and costume to shed light on the social practices of the day. We encounter a host of examples\, from the unfamiliar to the iconic\, including Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait\, Dürer’s Self Portrait as Christ\, Holbein’s Ambassadors\, and the Mona Lisa.

SUMMARY:The Women's Orchestra of Auschwitz: A story of survival and music with Anne Sebba
DESCRIPTION:In 1943\, the German SS officers in charge of Auschwitz-Birkenau ordered that an orchestra should be formed among the female prisoners. Forty-seven women and girls were drafted into a hurriedly-assembled band that would play to other inmates as they left each morning and as they returned at the end of the day. They were made to give weekly concerts for Nazi officers\, and members were sometimes summoned to give individual performances of an officer’s favourite piece of music. For almost all of the musicians chosen to take part\, the orchestra was to save their lives. \n\n\n\nWhy was the orchestra formed? What was the effect on those women who owed their survival to their participation in a Nazi propaganda project? And how did it feel to be forced to provide solace to the perpetrators of a genocide that claimed the lives of their family and friends? In The Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz\, award-winning historian Anne Sebba traces these tangled questions of deep moral complexity with sensitivity and care. \n\n\n\nFrom the orchestra’s formidable conductor (and niece of Gustav Mahler) Alma Rosé\, to Anita Lasker-Wallfisch\, its cellist and last surviving member\, i draw on a mixture of archival research and exclusive first-hand accounts to bring the full and astonishing story of the orchestra and its members to light for the very first time.

SUMMARY:Vincent in Ramsgate: Van Gogh in England with Jacqui Ansell
DESCRIPTION:Before he was a famous artist – or indeed an artist at all – Vincent Van Gogh was a disgruntled art salesman\, a failed suitor\, and a would-be teacher. We glimpse Vincent’s life through his letters which illuminate his inner thoughts\, passions and preoccupations. Focusing on a few short months from late 1875 to the middle of 1876 we find Vincent’s life at a crossroads\, having lost his job at the Paris branch of respected international art dealership Goupil & Cie. The main focus of the talk is how he found himself working in a small school in Ramsgate on the Kent coast. From the rich and poetic descriptions in his letters we discover more about this unique corner of England\, and how it attracted architects like A. W. N. Pugin to live there\, and artists\, writers and royalty to stay there and record their impressions of the place where Van Gogh found happiness albeit short-lived.

SUMMARY:Carry on up the Khyber - Movies and the end of an Empire with Colin Shindler
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to laugh at something too immediate. The surest sign that something serious has finished is when you can laugh at it. The end of the British Empire\, which started with the partition of India in 1947 but increased rapidly in the 1960s as the African colonies disappeared\, was immortalised in the very best Carry On film ever made. Set in India under the Raj but clearly filmed in Pinewood\, Up The Khyber starring Sid James as Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond and Kenneth Williams as the Khasi of Kalibar is a glorious parody of every imperial film ever made with its upstanding British heroes and mad/stupid/villainous natives.

SUMMARY:Imogen Corrigan - The Topsy-Turvy world of Misericords
DESCRIPTION:This lecture takes the audience on a tour of some of the extraordinary images that existin some 400 churches in England. The art form was in vogue mainly from C13th –C15th and rarely includes religious images despite the misericords being positioned soclose to the high altar. The secular\, sometimes bizarre and often profane nature of theirsubjects meant that many survived the Reformation and later religious enthusiasts.Much social comment can be gleaned from these carvings even though there are norecords describing why particular images were chosen and very often it is not possibleto date them accurately.

SUMMARY:Joanna Banham – Pleasure\, Practicality & Pain: The History of Shoes
DESCRIPTION:Shoes have provided essential protection for our feet ever since ancient times but theirdesign has rarely been inspired simply by comfort or necessity. Beautifully decorated\,hand-crafted and employing expensive materials\, they have also represented importantmarkers of status\, identity\, taste and even sexuality. Some\, like Medieval poulaineswith their elaborately elongated toes\, and Venetian chopines with their 22 inchplatforms\, epitomised the triumph of fashion over practicality.

SUMMARY:Douglas Skeggs - Monet: The Joy and the Torment
DESCRIPTION:Monet was the driving force of Impressionism. Ambitious\, determined and stubborn\, hewas gifted with an astonishing technical ability and a precision of observation that fewartists have rivalled. Brought up on the Seine estuary he came into contact with Boudinand Jongkind who inspired him to ignore the conventions of the past and work directlyfrom nature\, recording only what his eyes could see. In Paris he met Renoir\, Sisley\,Pissarro and Bazille\, then later Manet who invited them to join his artist friends at theCafe Guerbois. After a disastrous exhibition the group became known as theImpressionists\, a chance name that has remained with them ever since.
