SUMMARY:Visit: No Name Nursery
DESCRIPTION:On arrival we will enjoy bubbles/juice and cake before we begin to explore. Please note that this is a working nursery which is not normally open to the public so there is no seating area and a compostable loo! Parking is limited so shared cars will be arranged before our outing. There will be an exclusive opportunity to purchase plants while we are there. \n\n\n\nSteve Edney is well known to garden aficionados for his work in his former position as Head Gardener at The Salutation in Kent. He is currently engaged in an ambitious project creating a ‘dry garden’ in the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral. He serves on the RHS Herbaceous committee and won a Gold medal at Chelsea Flower Show in 2019. \n\n\n\nLou and Steve began work on this three-acre site during the first lockdown. It is the fruition of a long-held dream for which they had been saving over many years. The vision was for the site to be low maintenance with minimum watering and as sustainable as possible. It is off grid. \n\n\n\nNumbers will be strictly limited. Sign up and pay at our next lecture or email programme.sandwich@theartssociety.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Edney from No Name Nursery

SUMMARY:Summer Art Exhibition 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Society Sandwich\, this year in collaboration with the Arts Society Dover\, Deal and Sandwich\, has hosted another truly impressive “Summer Exhibition” of members’ art works. The Deputy Mayor of Sandwich\, Clare Ungerson\, formally opened the event at St Mary’s Art Centre on Friday 28th July. Thirty members exhibited their works and 14 of our artists made sales. Our Arts Societies recouped 25% commission on these sales which\, along with donations and proceeds from our coffee and delicious cakes\, helped to cover the costs of the event. An impressive 444 people came to view the show over three days and many provided the 22 pages of positive feedback in our Guest Book: ‘I’ve been inspired’\, ‘lovely varied exhibition\, thoroughly enjoyed it’\, ‘this was my favourite exhibition I have ever been to’\, ‘a lovely treat to see local art and to buy something special to me’. Our enthusiastic stewards engaged with visitors\, talking about our two arts societies and what we offer. Over the weekend 10 new members joined the Arts Society and we received generous donations amounting to £70. We are very proud to have hosted our Summer Art Exhibition again this year and hope to make it a regular event in the Sandwich arts calendar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the success of the TASS Summer Art Exhibition 2022\, The Arts Society Sandwich and Dover\, Deal and Sandwich have joined forces in 2023. St Mary’s Arts Centre in Strand Street\, Sandwich will again host the event from Friday 28 July to Sunday 30 July and we are anticipating another spectacular show. \n\n\n\nLast year the response from local residents and visitors was phenomenal and attracted many new members. With FREE entry from 10am until 4pm\, a warm welcome from stewards (and drinks and cake available) it promises to be another joyful event. All the pieces shown have been created by our members and invited guests. Whether it’s painting\, photography\, ceramics\, glass\, sculpture\, textiles or something else\, we want to celebrate the emerging and established talent within our societies. Some of the work will be for sale with a percentage of the proceeds going to support our Arts Societies. An ideal opportunity for you to pick up unique gifts and locally made works of art for your home. . \n\n\n\nWhether you plan to be an exhibitor or visitor\, you will be very welcome. Please support this local joint initiative and share with your family and friends. You are sure to be inspired! \n\n\n\nHow to get there: St Mary’s Arts Centre is on the corner of Strand Street and Church Street St Marys\, Sandwich. There is parking nearby at Gazen Salts Car Park (across the road) or at The Quay and it’s a short walk from the main bus stop outside the Guildhall and a slightly longer (but very pleasant) walk from Sandwich railway station. \n\n\n\nCrystal Evans\n\n\n\nTony Foster\n\n\n\nNicky Lambert\n\n\n\nCALL FOR ARTISTS\n\n\n\n If you are a member of TASS or TASDDS (or have come to our lectures as a guest) and want to exhibit your work in the 2023 exhibition please contact Christine Ratcliffe\, Christine.ratcliffe@outlook.com or telephone 07803238733\, as soon as possible and complete our booking form. \n\n\n\nLast year’s TASS Summer Art Exhibition at St Mary’s Arts Centre

SUMMARY:Annual Supper Evening 2023
DESCRIPTION:We had a very enjoyable summer supper for our members and their guests in July. This year we decided to change the venue to the beautiful St Mary’s Church (Arts Centre) in Sandwich. It proved to be a popular choice and we were able to take advantage of the size to easily accommodate everyone. We also decided to try a new caterer\, The Dining Club in Deal. They offered a wider choice of menus and dealt admirably with the limited kitchen facilities at St Mary’s\, as most of the preparations were done off site. We all really enjoyed a delicious supper. Our entertainment for the evening was the ever popular Bertie Pierce. Bertie has presented lectures to us on several occasions\, so we had an inkling of how he could amuse us…and he certainly did! Terrific magic before supper and wonderful tricks during the meal as he went around the tables. The event was a great success and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone next year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe have 86 photos of the Summer Supper\, if you have attended and would like the link\, please contact us at sandwich@theartssociety.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Annual Summer Supper Evening 2023 takes place on 14th July 2023. This year we will be heading to the historic and atmospheric St Mary’s Arts Centre for the evening\, pre-dinner drinks followed by a delicious buffet supper. Arts Society favourite\, Bertie Pierce* will delight and entertain us. This is a very social event and you are encouraged to invite non-members to join you. More details\, including the cost of tickets\, closer to the date. \n\n\n\n*Tony Liddington will now be booked to give a lecture in 2024

(Including gluten free and lactose free options)Accredited Arts Society lecturer\, Dr Gillian White\, will join us for the day.Tudor palaces were extravagant\, symbolic\, elegant and powerful\, providing a useful propaganda tool for an upstart dynasty.
