Celebrating Sandwich’s History Through Art
As Chair of The Arts Society Sandwich, I was delighted to be invited by Alison Farmer and Lynne Ripley to help judge entries for Sandwich Heritage Open Weekend art competition, celebrating the town’s fascinating history and heritage. The competition was open to any children who visited Sandwich Heritage Open Weekend.
I have to admit that, as someone whose own artistic abilities are somewhat less than stellar – D+ being my highest grade in art at “big school” – I approached the judging with a certain amount of impostor syndrome! Our Young Arts head, Anne Weatherly, was unfortunately unable to join me, but luckily my selections went unchallenged.
It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and creativity of the young artists who had worked so hard to make the week such a success.
And the prize winners were…
First Prize – “Sandwich Landmarks”
The Sandwich Junior School Art History Club created a vibrant collage featuring a selection of Sandwich landmarks. The choice received unanimous support from everyone assembled – a colourful and imaginative celebration of the town. See if you can recognise the places depicted. Well done to everyone involved!
Runner Up – “Good and Bad History of Sandwich”
This imaginative multimedia artwork by Eliza Godden explored some of the more unusual episodes in Sandwich’s past, including the Earl of Sandwich’s gambling and dining habits and the transportation of convicts to Australia.
Third Prize – “Medieval Cog”
Luna Matlock won third prize for her masterfully depicted medieval cog, inspired by the historic vessel at the Sandwich Medieval Centre.
Equal Third Prize – “Motte-and-Bailey Castle”
Aurelia Matlock took equal third prize with a delightful motte-and-bailey castle featuring two cheerful knights. Clearly there is plenty of artistic talent in the Matlock family, with both Luna and Aurelia among our prize winners!
It was a real pleasure to see local history brought to life through the imagination of Sandwich’s young artists. A huge congratulations to all the children who took part, and to everyone who helped make Sandwich Heritage Open Weekend such a success.
And if they are looking for some nautical inspiration next year, St Mary’s Church has a fascinating memorial to Admiral Rainier – another intriguing chapter in Sandwich’s history!
