November Spotlight – Sue Fitzgerald – Colourist
This month, our TASS Spotlight Artist is the vibrant and accomplished
Sue Fitzgerald, whose paintings are filled with colour, light, texture and
stories gathered from a lifetime of travel.
Sue has lived in the Far East, the Middle East, various places in Western
Europe including having her own cottage in the Languedoc area of France.
Chinese fine blue and white porcelain and Nonya pots, very much
associated with Sue Fitzgerald’s work, are meticulously painted with a
backdrop of luscious antique silks.
Sue has been a full-time professional artist for many years and has
exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad. She has had a particularly
long association with the Catto Gallery in Hampstead, London, where
she has exhibited for more than 35 years and has held numerous solo
exhibitions. Her paintings are now enjoyed by collectors around the
world.
Sue is renowned for her extraordinary use of colour. Her paintings have
been described as filling galleries with “glowing colour and light” – and
her work certainly has an exuberance that demands attention.
Yet behind the sumptuous colours and textures there is always a story.
Sue’s paintings are often inspired by places she has visited, as well as
memorable moments encountered along the way.
Take Emerald Hill, recalling an area of Singapore that Sue knew from
her time living there. While sketching the original houses, Sue found
herself perched on a roadside bollard until a kindly resident appeared
with a chair and a pot of jasmine tea! These personal experiences
become woven into the rich visual narratives of her paintings.
Sue creates her distinctive surfaces by building up multiple layers of
mixed media, together with translucent and opaque acrylics. The
result is work with remarkable depth, luminosity and texture.
We hope you enjoy exploring the colourful and wonderfully evocative
world of Sue Fitzgerald.
